Lender Perspectives

Mortgage rates are at the highest rate since March, 2020, but are still low historically speaking. The last few weeks have seen a lot of volatility with the market is digesting a lot of economic data, including retail sales which came out Friday morning much weaker than market expectations, showing a 1.9% decline. The market is also digesting corporate earnings reports, the highest inflation numbers in decades, and recent comments by Fed policymakers that at least three, possibly four rate hikes are in store this year. While inflation is at the highest level in decades, financial markets seem confident that the Fed will be on top of this based on Fed Chair Powell’s remarks this past week before the Senate Banking Committee. He indicated the Fed would act to tame inflation and he did not signal more aggressive action than indicated in the Fed's December monetary policy meeting. While rates may be up from all-time lows over the past couple of years due to the economic fallout from COVID, rates appear to be returning to more a normalized level.
