Materials:

  • Bucket
  • Vinegar or bleach
  • Soft brush or cloth
  • Water hose (optional)

Steps:

  1. Turn off the Power:

    • Locate the circuit breaker that controls the sump pump and turn it off to ensure safety.
  2. Remove the Pump Cover:

    • Remove the cover of the sump pump by lifting it off carefully.
  3. Inspect the Pump and Check Valve:

    • Check for any visible signs of damage, debris, or obstructions in the pump and check valve.
    • Ensure that the check valve is working properly and is not stuck open or closed.
  4. Clean the Pump:

    • Use a soft brush or cloth to gently clean the pump and check valve.
    • If there is any buildup or debris, use a mixture of vinegar and water or bleach and water to clean the pump.
    • Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that could damage the pump.
  5. Check the Float Switch:

    • Ensure that the float switch moves freely and is not obstructed.
    • The float switch should be able to move up and down smoothly to activate the pump.
  6. Test the Pump:

    • Pour a bucket of water into the sump pit to test the pump.
    • The pump should turn on automatically and begin pumping water out of the pit.
    • If the pump does not turn on, check the power source and the float switch.
  7. Clean the Sump Pit:

    • Remove any debris, dirt, or sediment from the sump pit using a bucket or water hose.
    • Ensure that the sump pit is clean and free of obstructions that could interfere with the pump.
  8. Replace the Pump Cover:

    • Once you have inspected and cleaned the sump pump, replace the pump cover securely.
  9. Test the Pump Again:

    • Pour another bucket of water into the sump pit to ensure that the pump is working properly.
  10. Restore Power:

    • Turn the circuit breaker back on to restore power to the sump pump.
