WHAT'S UP THIS WEEKEND?
Excerpts From TravelPortland.com
GRAND PRIX OF PORTLAND
Every fall since 2018, Portland International Raceway has hosted the celebrated open-wheel racing with the Grand Prix of Portland. Held from 1984–2007 under various names, the race is back at Portland International Raceway as the only Verizon IndyCar Series race in the Pacific Northwest.
Unlike the most famous IndyCar race — the Indianapolis 500 — the Grand Prix of Portland isn’t run on a simple oval. Portland’s 1.967-mile (3.166 km) course boasts 12 turns and several exciting passing opportunities, including a quick chicane at the end of the front stretch, a hard-breaking right leading into the backstretch and a three-turn complex leading back to the front stretch.
“Portland International Raceway has produced thrilling road racing throughout Indy car history — the 1997 finish still stands as the record for the closest finish on a road or street course,” says Mark Miles, CEO of Hulman & Company, owners of the Verizon IndyCar Series.
The race weekend includes multiple other races, all featuring aspiring young drivers and new state-of-the-art chassis. For a full lineup of events, visit the Grand Prix of Portland’s website
MONTAVILLA JAZZ FESTIVAL
Montavilla Jazz’s 10th Annual Festival runs September 1–3, 2023, with concerts across the city featuring original jazz by world-class local artists. This year, the festival highlights some of Portland’s jazz scene-makers, with internationally-acclaimed drummer Alan Jones headlining the festival Sunday evening with his quartet featuring Grammy Award-winners Tivon Pennicott and Kevin Hays, joined by NYC bassist Joe Martin.
PORTLAND CLASSIC
The LPGA tour’s longest-running non-major tournament is set to return to the Pacific Northwest. For 52 years, Portland’s best courses have played host to some of the strongest fields in golf. As players from all corners of the world enter the final stretch of the Race to the CME Globe, Portland’s supportive fanbase is always treated to a unique spectacle.
There’s no shortage of great moments in the history of the Portland Classic, and no one supplies those moments quite like our champions. From legends of the game to rising stars, all have put on outstanding performances to win. With the Portland Classic boasting one of the most competitive fields in the LPGA tour season, it’s anyone’s guess who will rise to the occasion in September.

CHAPMAN SWIOFT WATCH
Great blue herons, bald eagles and peregrine falcons are just a few of the Rose City avian residents routinely spotted by visitors. But to really “put a bird” on a Portland memory, mark the calendar for September’s Chapman Swift Watch — the time of year when thousands of Vaux’s swifts drift through the city on their annual migration from Canada to Central and South America. The tiny birds spend their days hunting for insects and their evenings roosting, bat-like, in trees and chimneys.
THE CORN MAIZE ON SAUVIE ISLAND
When summer winds down, Portland’s fall arrives with warm, sunny days and cool, clear nights. The ideal way to get lost in autumn’s splendor is at The Maize at the Pumpkin Patch. Located on Sauvie Island., a rural escape just 13 miles (21 km) north of downtown Portland, the Corn Maize offers visitors eight acres (3 hectares) of exciting twists and turns. But it’s not all about getting lost in nature; Two 16-foot (5 m) observation bridges provide picturesque panoramas, with great views of the island and Mount Hood, as well as the maze itself.
As well as the corn maze, guests can take a trip on a hayride out to the pumpkin patch to find the perfect pumpkin, or pet farm animals and make a new feathery friend at the Big Red Barn. Not in the mood to traipse out into the pumpkin field? Explore the gift shop or have a relaxing lunch in the cafe, the family farm has activities to delight any visitor.
DAHLIA FESTIVAL

NORTH COAST FOOD TRAIL

Some 100 or more miles of foodstuffs, drinks and culinary-themed adventures await with Visit Tillamook Coast’s North Coast Food Trail, which starts at the southern edges of the Tillamook County line at Neskowin and runs up through Cannon Beach, Seaside and now Astoria.
ART IN THE PEARL FINE ART AND CRAFTS FESTIVAL
Portland’s Art In The Pearl Fine Arts and Craft Festival celebrates 26 years of bringing art to the community. The distinctly artist-run event has long been a favorite in Portland, and it’s the perfect Labor Day destination to gather and celebrate the end of summer.
Art In The Pearl is Portland’s largest outdoor art fair, drawing thousands of people every year to its beautiful location under the canopy of trees in the historic North Park Blocks of the Pearl District. Strolling among the rows of freestanding exhibits, visitors can meet the artists and purchase original artwork. It’s an enjoyable art shopping experience for veteran art collectors as well as newcomers and families.
ALBANY FARMER'S MARKET
Founded in 1978, the Albany Farmers’ Market is the oldest continuously operated open-air farmers’ market in Oregon. Located in the City Hall parking lot and on an adjacent street that fronts the Linn County Courthouse, the market offers visitors an abundance of fresh, locally sourced food. From ripe, juicy produce to artisanal cheeses and freshly baked bread, there is something for everyone to enjoy. The market also features the Power of Produce Club, a kids’ program for ages 5-12 that provides hands-on educational activities and promotes healthy eating habits. Although the market has evolved over the years, it continues to honor its roots and celebrate the community’s deep connection to the land. So whether you’re a longtime resident or just passing through, come experience the magic of the Albany Farmers’ Market for yourself.
MONTAVILLA FARMERS MARKET
Neighborhood farmers market featuring local farms, distilleries, coffee, bakeries, flowers, hot food vendors and more. The market was founded by a grassroots collection of neighbors who were inspired by visions of a fresh, local, food market in a shared community space within the growing SE Stark Street business district. This dedicated group opened the market in just 10 short months with a small amount of grant funds and a generous outpouring of donations from local businesses, friends and neighbors. The tireless energy of these un-paid visionaries and countless other volunteers allowed MFM to open its first market on Sunday, July 22, 2007, with 17 vendors and over 2000 visitors. Montavilla Farmers Market is a thriving, diverse marketplace where all are welcome.
