Why buyers choose Cornelius
Cornelius began as Free Orchards, a farm town that grew up around the railroad in the 1870s and was renamed for Thomas R. Cornelius, an Oregon Trail pioneer who farmed 1,300 acres here. The city was incorporated in 1893, and more than a century later it still feels like the small town it started as: a walkable core along Baseline Street, neighborhoods of mid-century and newer family homes, and farm fields and nurseries pressing in from every side.
The draw today is the balance of price and place. Cornelius is one of the most affordable towns on the Portland westside, with a housing market that runs well below Beaverton and Hillsboro for comparable homes. It is also one of the region's most culturally diverse communities, with a large Hispanic and Latino population that anchors a lively taqueria scene and a full calendar of community events. And for work, the Silicon Forest sits ten to fifteen minutes east: Intel's Hillsboro campuses anchor a commute that keeps many residents minutes from home.

A tight-knit, culturally rich community
Cornelius's population was 12,694 at the 2020 census and has grown fast since, with the Census Bureau estimating about 15,500 residents by 2025, one of Washington County's quicker-growing cities. It is a young, family-oriented community with a significant Hispanic and Latino population, and that shows up in the food, the festivals, and the small-town welcome.
The neighborhoods are compact and walkable. Central Cornelius around Baseline and Adair is the small-town core, with the new library, the YMCA, and older bungalows and farmhouses. Southwest Cornelius holds the newest subdivisions and is popular with families. 03 · Major Employers
Farming roots, Silicon Forest reach
Cornelius is largely a commuter town, so the biggest names in the local economy sit minutes away in Hillsboro and Forest Grove. In town, the anchors are the agricultural-supply and farm-service firms that have served the Tualatin Valley for generations, plus community institutions:
The agricultural and nursery cluster
The firms that supply and service the farms and nurseries of the Tualatin Valley are among the largest employers inside the city limits, a legacy of the nursery and berry country that still surrounds the town.
Intel (Hillsboro)
Oregon's largest private employer and the anchor of the Silicon Forest, with roughly 22,000 employees across its Ronler Acres, Jones Farm, and Hawthorn Farm campuses in nearby Hillsboro. Intel is the single biggest destination for Cornelius commuters, about ten to fifteen minutes east.
Pacific University (Forest Grove)
The largest private employer in neighboring Forest Grove and the anchor of the west end of the corridor. The university, founded in 1849, brings students, faculty, and events to the Tualatin Valley.
Forest Grove School District and community institutions
The school district that serves most of Cornelius is the dominant public employer alongside city government. Centro Cultural de Washington County and other community nonprofits round out the local base.
The Silicon Forest and health cluster
ASML and Tokyo Electron America each employ about 1,200 people in Hillsboro, Hillsboro Medical Center (OHSU Health) about 1,100, and Kaiser Permanente's Westside hospital about 1,060. Together with Intel they make the commute east the backbone of the local economy.
