Area Guide No. 6
Newberg, Oregon
Yamhill County · 97132 · About 24 miles southwest of downtown Portland
Newberg is the wine-country town at the north end of the Willamette Valley, the second-largest city in Yamhill County and the most convenient wine region to the Portland metro. Buyers choose it for prices that still sit below the Washington County suburbs, a historic Old Town built around First Street, the energy of George Fox University, and a front-row seat to the Chehalem Mountains, Dundee Hills, and Ribbon Ridge appellations.

Why buyers choose Newberg
Newberg grew from a Quaker farming settlement into the gateway to Oregon wine country, and it wears that history well: a walkable Old Town along First Street, Craftsman and Victorian homes on tree-lined blocks, and vineyards rising into the hills on every side. The city sits about 24 miles southwest of downtown Portland, which makes it a practical base for Westside commuters and a relaxed one for families who want valley space without giving up the metro.
The big draw is the balance. George Fox University, Oregon's largest private university, anchors downtown with students and events year-round. The Newberg School District serves the town with a true community feel. The Chehalem Parks and Recreation District keeps parks, trails, and an aquatic center close to home. And the wine industry, from the Chehalem Mountains to the Dundee Hills, makes Newberg one of the most livable small cities in the Willamette Valley.

A college town with a wine-country heart
Newberg's population was 25,138 at the 2020 census, with recent estimates around 26,000 to 27,000, making it the second-largest city in Yamhill County. The town overall reads as car-dependent on Walk Score, but the First Street core and the blocks around George Fox University are genuinely walkable, with shops, tasting rooms, and restaurants on foot.
The neighborhoods run the gamut. Old Town and the First Street core are the historic commercial heart, with tasting rooms, restaurants, and events. The George Fox University area and College Park are walkable, family-friendly blocks near campus. Knob Hill and the Edwards neighborhood hold Craftsman, bungalow, and turn-of-the-century stock close to downtown. North Newberg and Springbrook are the growing side of town, where master-planned areas like the new Collina neighborhood are being built out. And the wine-country edge toward the Chehalem Mountains and Dundee Hills offers acreage, hobby farms, and vineyard-adjacent properties.
Newberg sits in the Newberg School District 29J (often called Newberg-Dundee), a K-12 public district of about ten schools and roughly 4,000 students, with elementary schools including Antonia Crater, Dundee, Edwards, Ewing Young, Joan Austin, and Mabel Rush, Chehalem Valley and Mountain View middle schools, and Newberg High School. Boundaries vary by exact address, so we always verify the feeder school for a specific property before you commit.
