01 · Area Highlights
Portland's most urban living
Downtown and Northwest Portland is where the city's urban life is densest. Downtown is the employment and transit heart, with MAX lines, the bus mall, and the Willamette riverfront at its edge. The Pearl District turned turn-of-the-century warehouses into lofts, galleries, and restaurants. The Northwest District is the classic Portland shopping neighborhood, with NW 21st and 23rd Avenues lined by cafes, boutiques, and historic apartments and houses.
Old Town Chinatown holds the city's oldest architecture and its most concentrated culture, from Lan Su Chinese Garden to the Saturday Market. Goose Hollow is the residential pocket at the foot of the west hills, with established streets, apartments, and the MAX tunnel that runs to Washington Park. Housing here skews toward condos, apartments, and lofts, with historic single-family homes in the Northwest District and Goose Hollow.

02 · Community Detail
Five neighborhoods, one urban core
Downtown and Northwest Portland is the city's most character-diverse quarter: office towers, loft districts, historic shopping streets, and quiet residential blocks all within walking distance of one another. It is also the most transit-connected part of Portland, with every MAX line, the streetcar, and the aerial tram converging here.
Housing runs the full spectrum, from high-rise condos and apartments downtown and in the Pearl to early 1900s foursquares and Victorians in the Northwest District and Goose Hollow. It is the part of Portland where buyers most often trade square footage for location, walkability, and views.

03 · Major Employers
The central city economy
Downtown is Portland's largest employment center. The biggest names in the region sit just outside the core, but the central city holds the headquarters, government, healthcare, and creative industries that anchor the metro economy:
OHSU
Oregon Health & Science University is the region's largest employer, with its main Marquam Hill campus immediately south of downtown and a second campus at South Waterfront.
City, county, and state government
Downtown Portland is the seat of the City of Portland, Multnomah County, and a cluster of State of Oregon offices, making public-sector work one of the district's biggest employment bases.
Headquartered downtown
Cambia Health Solutions (Regence), Daimler Trucks North America, Standard Insurance, Portland General Electric, and NW Natural all keep headquarters or major offices in the central city.
Healthcare systems
Providence Health & Services and Legacy Health run hospitals and clinics in and around downtown, anchoring the medical employment base.
The Pearl District
The Pearl is home to the advertising agency Wieden+Kennedy and Powell's City of Books, along with galleries, tech offices, and creative firms in converted warehouses.
