Northeast Portland

Historic neighborhoods · Arts · Residential variety

Northeast Portland is the city's most historic east-side quarter: grand early 20th-century homes in Irvington, the arts-and-restaurants scene of Alberta, the theaters and transit hub of Hollywood, and quiet residential neighborhoods like Beaumont-Wilshire, Rose City Park, and Cully. It offers the widest range of housing styles in Portland, from Victorian-era mansions to mid-century ranches and new infill.

01 · Area Highlights

The east side's historic quarter

Northeast Portland grew up around the streetcar lines of the early 1900s, and the neighborhoods still follow that pattern: commercial corners, walkable main streets, and blocks of handsome homes. Irvington is the showpiece, with some of the finest early 20th-century architecture in the city. Alberta is the arts district, famous for its murals, galleries, and the monthly Last Thursday art walk.

Hollywood is the transit and shopping hub, anchored by the Hollywood Theatre and the MAX and bus lines that converge there. Beaumont-Wilshire, Rose City Park, and Cully are the quieter residential neighborhoods, with traditional homes, parks, and, in Cully's case, larger lots and a strongly diverse community.

02 · Community Detail

Six neighborhoods, one historic quarter

Northeast Portland is really a collection of distinct villages. Alberta has the arts scene, Hollywood has the theaters and transit, Irvington has the grand historic homes, and Beaumont-Wilshire, Rose City Park, and Cully offer the classic family neighborhoods with parks and schools.

The housing stock spans more than a century: Victorian and Edwardian homes in Irvington, craftsman bungalows across the district, mid-century ranches in Rose City Park and Cully, and new infill along the main corridors. It is the east side's most architecturally varied quarter.
